A wedding can take months to plan.
The dress.
The venue.
The food.
The music.
The photographs.
The guests.
But marriage can last decades.
And yet, sometimes people spend more time planning the wedding than thinking about the person they are actually marrying.
Marriage is not simply a celebration.
It is a choice.
And perhaps one of the biggest choices a person can make.

LOVE MATTERS, BUT LOVE ISN'T EVERYTHING
Love is important.
Very important.
But love alone doesn't automatically create a healthy marriage.
Two people can love each other deeply and still struggle to live together.
Why?
Because marriage introduces questions that romance doesn't always answer.
How do you handle money?
How do you communicate when you're angry?
How do you resolve disagreements?
What role will family play in your relationship?
What are your expectations about children?
How do you handle responsibilities?
What happens when one person's career changes?
What happens when life becomes difficult?
These conversations may not feel romantic.
But they are necessary.

CHOOSE CHARACTER, NOT JUST CHEMISTRY
Attraction can bring two people together.
Character determines how they treat each other when things become difficult.
Before saying “I do,” pay attention to how a person treats people who cannot benefit them.
How do they behave when they're angry?
Can they apologize?
Do they respect boundaries?
Can they admit when they're wrong?
Do their actions match their words?
Someone can say beautiful things and still have poor character.
Marriage eventually reveals what dating sometimes hides.

DON'T MARRY BECAUSE YOU'RE UNDER PRESSURE
Pressure can come from many directions.
Family.
Friends.
Age.
Culture.
Society.
The fear of being alone.
The belief that everyone else is moving ahead.
But marriage should not be a race.
Someone else's timeline is not your timeline.
Being single is not a failure.
And getting married isn't automatically an achievement.
The goal shouldn't simply be to get married.
The goal should be to build a marriage that is healthy, respectful and sustainable.

TALK ABOUT THE DIFFICULT THINGS
Before marriage, couples should be able to discuss uncomfortable subjects.
Money.
Children.
Faith.
Career.
Family boundaries.
Living arrangements.
Household responsibilities.
Conflict.
Personal goals.
Expectations.
If two people cannot have difficult conversations before marriage, marriage will not magically make those conversations easier.
In fact, it may make them more important.

DON'T CHOOSE A SPOUSE FOR A SEASON
Some relationships look perfect when everything is exciting.
But life is not always exciting.
There will be stressful seasons.
Financial pressure.
Career changes.
Family challenges.
Disagreements.
Disappointment.
The question isn't whether difficulties will come.
The question is:
Who will you be facing them with?

THE WEDDING LASTS A DAY. THE CHOICE LASTS MUCH LONGER.
A beautiful wedding is wonderful.
Celebrate it.
Take the pictures.
Dance.
Enjoy the moment.
But remember that the wedding is an event.
Marriage is a life.
So before choosing the venue, ask whether you've carefully chosen the person.
Before choosing the colour scheme, discuss your values.
Before preparing your vows, make sure you understand the commitment.
Because ultimately, marriage isn't about finding someone who looks perfect beside you.
It's about choosing someone with whom you can build, communicate, grow, disagree, forgive, support and walk through life.
Choose the person.
Not just the wedding.
