Not Everything We Miss Is Something We Should Get Back.

Not Everything We Miss Is Something We Should Get Back.
Sometimes, we miss people we know we shouldn't return to.
It sounds contradictory, but it is incredibly human. We don't always miss the entire person. Sometimes, we miss the memories, the familiarity, the laughter, the conversations and even the version of ourselves we were around them.

The strange thing about time is that it can soften the unpleasant parts.
The arguments become blurry while the good moments become louder.
We remember the birthday surprises but forget the disappointment.
We remember the laughter but forget the nights we cried.
And then comes the dangerous thought: “Maybe it wasn't that bad.”
But memories are selective. Our minds have a way of holding onto moments that made us happy while pushing uncomfortable experiences into the background. That doesn't mean the difficult moments didn't happen.

Sometimes, we don't even miss the person. We miss the routine.
We miss having someone to call.
We miss knowing somebody was there.
We miss the inside jokes,
The familiar conversations and the feeling of being important to someone.
And because that absence hurts, we can mistake loneliness for a reason to go back.
But missing someone doesn't automatically mean they were good for you.
You can miss someone who hurt you.
You can miss a place you outgrew.
You can miss a version of yourself that no longer exists.
Missing something is simply a feeling; it doesn't have to become a decision.
That is why moving on isn't always about forgetting. Sometimes, it's about remembering the good without allowing the memory to rewrite the truth.

Your heart may remember the beautiful moments while your mind remembers why you had to leave.
And both can be true.
You can love someone, miss them and still know that returning to them would take you backwards.
Not everything we miss is something we should get back.
