Why We've Forgotten How to Be Patient, and What It's Costing Our Lives
There was a time when waiting was simply part of life.
- You waited for your favorite TV show to air once a week.
- You waited for photographs to be developed before seeing how they turned out.
- You waited for letters to arrive, birthdays to come, the holidays to begin, and for someone to call the house phone.
Waiting wasn't exciting, but it taught us something today's world is slowly taking away.
Patience.
Now, we live in an era where almost everything happens instantly.
- Food arrives at our doorstep with a few taps.
- Movies begin the second we press play.
- We can message someone across the world and receive a reply in seconds.
We have become so used to speed that even a slow internet connection feels like a personal attack.

Somewhere along the way, we stopped seeing waiting as a normal part of life and started treating it like an inconvenience.
- Have you ever stood in front of a microwave, impatiently watching the final ten seconds count down?
- Or refreshed a webpage because it took an extra second to load?
- Have you checked your phone moments after sending a message because the other person hadn't replied yet?
We've become uncomfortable with silence, delays, and uncertainty.
The problem isn't that technology is fast. The problem is that our minds now expect everything, including success, healing, relationships, and personal growth, to happen just as quickly.
- We want six-pack abs after a week in the gym.
- We expect a new business to become profitable overnight.
- We post one video and wonder why it hasn't gone viral.
- We learn one skill and expect to become experts immediately.
Life doesn't work that way.
The strongest trees spend years growing their roots before anyone admires their height. Diamonds are formed under pressure over time.
Great musicians, athletes, artists, and entrepreneurs all have one thing in common: they stayed committed long after the excitement faded.

Waiting isn't wasted time.
Sometimes, waiting is where character is built.
Think about baking bread. If you rush the process, the dough doesn't rise properly. Think about farming. A farmer cannot plant seeds today and harvest tomorrow. Nature itself reminds us that the best things develop gradually.
Ironically, the very things that matter most in life still refuse to be rushed.
Trust. Friendship. Love. Wisdom. Experience. Healing.
No app can speed them up.
There is also a hidden beauty in waiting that many people overlook.
Waiting gives us space to notice things;
- To observe people.
- To appreciate conversations.
- To think deeply instead of reacting instantly.
Some of life's greatest ideas have come during moments when people weren't distracted by endless notifications.

When you're standing in a queue, sitting in traffic, or waiting for an answer you've been hoping for, don't immediately reach for your phone.
Look around.
Notice the world.
Watch people smile. Listen to the birds. Feel the breeze. Let your thoughts breathe.
Because not every delay is a punishment.
Sometimes, it's preparation.
Perhaps the art of waiting was never about standing still.
Perhaps it was always about growing while time quietly did its work.
And maybe that's the lesson our fast-moving world needs most.
