THE WORLD NEEDS 50 MILLION MORE TEACHERS. WHO WILL TEACH THE NEXT GENERATION?
Imagine walking into a classroom ready to learn, only to discover that there aren't enough teachers to teach everyone.
This is a growing global challenge.
According to new data released by UNESCO in October 2026, the world needs an additional 50 million teachers by 2030 to ensure every child has access to pre-primary, primary and secondary education.
According to new data released by UNESCO in October 2026, the world needs an additional 50 million teachers by 2030 to ensure every child has access to pre-primary, primary and secondary education.
The organisation estimates that there are currently 107 million teachers worldwide. Yet, despite this large workforce, many education systems continue to struggle with teacher shortages, difficult working conditions and challenges in attracting and retaining qualified educators.
The shortage could mean overcrowded classrooms, heavier workloads for existing teachers and fewer opportunities for students to receive individual attention.
UNESCO says addressing the problem requires countries to invest in teacher recruitment, better working conditions, professional development and measures that make teaching an attractive long-term career.
The big question: How can the world prepare the next generation if there aren't enough people available to teach them?
Education depends on more than school buildings, textbooks and technology. Behind every lesson that changes a student's life is a teacher who makes learning possible.
