Two different ideas but one solution: Daniel Bernoulli and Henri Pitot

This is a brilliant pairing , Daniel Bernoulli and Henri Pitot. Two minds, two different ideas, but ultimately one solution that transformed how we understand fluid dynamics.

There has been age long question on how to keep man in the air,  There come Daniel Bernoulli and Henri Pitot, who put both equation and ideas to test 

One gave us an Equation while the other gave us an instrument.....and it took us another 150 years more to finally put man in the ai

Bernoulli’s Principle
  • Bernoulli (1700–1782) discovered that as the speed of a fluid increases, its pressure decreases.
  • This principle explained airflow, lift, and countless phenomena in hydraulics and aerodynamics.
  • His insight was theoretical, rooted in mathematics and physics.

  • Henri Pitot (1695–1771), an engineer, invented the Pitot tube to measure fluid velocity directly.
  • It works by comparing static pressure and dynamic pressure in a flowing fluid.

While in Switzerland, Bernoulli came up with an equation which is the fundamental for fluid mechanics.

While in France, Henri Pitot ignites an idea by simply observing Bernoulli equation on a flowing River.


Bernoulli's equation represents conservation of energy for a moving fluid. It states that the sum of pressure energy, kinetic energy, and potential energy per unit volume is constant along a streamline:

This combination is a perfect counterpoint to the Cobra and Dunning–Kruger effects we discussed earlier. Instead of misjudgment and unintended consequences, Bernoulli and Pitot show how collaboration between theory and practice can yield lasting progress.
